Turning a Negative Into a Positive...

by Joseph Carlson

I've talked about hype before, but I saw Suicide Squad this weekend and something really hit me as I walked out.  There were a lot of negative critical reviews of the movie before I went and saw it but the people I went with(mostly my family) really seemed to enjoy it.  I have to say the more I think about the movie my feelings are mixed but I don't outright hate it.

That would be a massive mistake and then again it doesn't really matter.  As of writing this Forbes has reported that the movie has already made 572 million dollars worldwide so I guess it really doesn't matter if people don't like it.  I wonder if the executives involved in the desicion making process really care about the critical reviews.  I wonder if it even matters to the director.  I'm not say David Ayers doesn't have principals or anything but he did recieve payment for the work he did on the movie.  If his experience was less then good at least now his check clear.

That's sounds really bad I know, but think about it.  We have all had bad days at work or maybe even bad weeks at work and sometimes we don't know what to make of it.  Sometimes though all the time we spend on something at the end of the day we still get paid.  Hopefully it's enough to go home and spend time with our families.

Do the reivews even change that plans the studio has when it comes to making the rest of their movies.  DC has been trying for a while to make it's own cinematic universe.  Do they look at everything that has been written about it and decide to completely change what it is doing?  Or can they with the amount of moving parts that are involoved in it.

Can we even vote with our wallets anymore.  I mean, we are always told to do that.  It's important that we show people that by spending money on something means we actually care about it.  Maybe some people though, after reading all of these different reviews of the thing went to go see it just to see what if the movie was really that bad.

And then we get to 572 million dollars.  So in the end does it even matter if we don't like something.  I went and saw the The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies and I didn't like it.  I didn't like it so much my friend and I talked till we were almost blue in the face about how much we didn't like it.  It didn't matter though because we ended up paying money to see it.  The studio got my dollar.  My friend and I lost.  My friend even mentioned to me that he may go see it again just to see if his dislike of the movie was justified.  I told him not to do that.  Don't give the studio more money.

So how do we tell people now that we don't like things.  I try to stay positive with my reviews and such but in the end does it really matter?  Have I made a difference even though I have paid for it.  How do I get the word out that I actually don't like something when I kind of endorse it?
