Not only does Season 2 of the show give our hero's new adversaries but it also gives each character and plot matter with careful writing and great plotting. With only 10 episodes it seems that no one scene is wasted and each moment matters. The very last episode not only finishes a main story thread but also starts another and finds each character in a new unique place.
With the witches coming forward to be the main villain and them seeking Vanessa Ives for their 'Master' it comes to a head in a massive struggle to see which half is stronger, the Male, in this case the one half of the coin of evil to begin the apocalypse, or Female, the bringer of darkness when united with the male component will bring about the end of the world.
One interesting thing I will note is that Mr. Sembene and Mr. Lyle are side characters that became more rich the more we spent time with them. Something that is difficult for any show to do and I applaud Penny Dreadful for making me care about people that in another show would be thrown away.
And then there is Mr. Chandler someone who we know what he is, a werewolf, but he himself learns the depth of what he becomes in Season 2 and it is difficult to watch. Not because it doesn't make sense or it is poorly put together but mostly to the fact that it so rich and heartbreaking to watch a man who a good heart do terrible things.
As for the final confrontation, Miss Ives is more powerful then her counterpart and those destroys her 'Beloved' and except for one witch, the coven of witches that were seeking her out for her for their own gain.
Season 2 of Penny Dreadful is rare indeed, as good as the first season in some respects and better in others. Adding to the characters to make them richer, and leaving you wanting more in return. Something that does not happen often in Television.
