Netflix Review: Penny Dreadful Season 1

by Joseph Carlson

(Spoilers for Season 1)

It's truly amazing how well this show works.  You have famous literary characters from Victorian times coming together to basically solve a mystery.  You have Victor Frankenstein, The Bride of the Devil and a Werewolf.  That last one isn't really a spoiler if you watch the opening sequence carefully though.

And the mystery involving them is good.  One, Miss Vanessa Ives, who is possessed by an ancient spirit and has caught the eye of the devil himself needs to rid herself of this affliction.  Also, Sir Malcolm Murray, needs to find his daughter Mina Harker who has been taken over by 'The Master'.  Mr. Victor Frankenstein, who's creation comes back to him violently one night and tells him that he wants a companion.  Rounding out the group is Mr. Ethan Chandler has a dark past in America and has fled to Britain to get away from the law.

Again, how this all works is truly amazing.  The cast very great indeed and the dialogue riveting.  There is no scene that is wasted or moment that seems trivial.  It all adds up to a truly great ending that leaves you hitting the play button on Netflix.

I won't spoil the ending of season 1 but since there is two more seasons on Netflix season 1 acts as a gateway to more stories and possibly more characters.  I'll continue to review the series as I am able to watch more.  Stay tuned.
