In 2017 there was a lot of great stuff out there. Movies, games, music, and television. From Zelda: Breath of the Wild to Get Out to The Handmaid's Tale. There were so many things out there to keep us entertained and to make us think. This year was truly great for so many reasons.
I wanted to start out by talking about the stuff that I missed this year, but that would be a little bit too rambling and not fun and all and well, just a list. Don't get me wrong, I actually like a good list, but there are already a lot of those out there and I suppose if you really wanted one you could go out and read one of those. So instead was going to talk about good being terrible this year.
Let's take a look at an example. On March 3rd, 2017 the Nintendo Switch launched as well as the greatly anticipated Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It was a masterpiece in gaming. A vast open world that totally reinvigorated the franchise after it had been in a slump for years.
Link could really go anywhere and do so many things that hundreds of hours of game play and several internet websites talking about it, there were still things that the world showed you. To this day I haven't seen everything in the game and haven't beaten Ganon yet.
Points aside, a week before Zelda launched Horizon: Zero Dawn launched on the PlayStation 4. It was a truly beautiful game and although I haven't spent as much time with it then with Zelda, it was swallowed by the Nintendo hype (It's worth pointing out that it probably didn't help that Nintendo released a console at the same time).
To me this is the biggest thing that happened with entertainment in 2017. Great games made good games seem outright horrible. Now, I'm not going to belittle any games or give any reviews but I think we can all agree that some games were 'great' enough.
It's too bad as well. There is a lot of stuff out there that I just don't have time to get to. As an aside as well it's terrible when you review from outlets that I trust that say that the show/game/movie is only 'okay' or '5/10'. It makes me look towards things that are rated more highly to begin with.
I guess what I'm saying is that 2017 was a great year and all media in a way was grading on a curve. If you were okay, you were terrible. If you were anything else then well, too bad.
