Revisting Old Friends: Lord of the Rings Online

by Joseph Carlson

It's strange how time and money can really change your perspective.  In 2007 when Lord of the Rings Online launched I loved the setting and the characters.  I also really enjoyed how your character was basically following The Fellowship and assisting in their quest.

Fast forward nine years and several expansions.  The game is now free to play with no monthly subscription.  It's free-to-play with a cash shop now bringing in the revenue to sustain it.

What a difference that makes too.  I'm really surprised by how much I really liked the game.  Back then and now.  The changes the developers have made have been for the better, I think they did a great job making Middle-Earth amazing again.  They have added cut scenes and easier looting systems.  Along with legendary weapons that level up with you and with all the paid expansions they have released there is a ton of content to dive into if you want.

The biggest thing that surprised me was that the voice over to tell you what has gone on with chapter is top-notch with a beautifully voice-acted narrator telling you what going to happen next.  The main story quest is broken up into chapters with you sometimes meeting many people that are in The Fellowship helping them in their quest directly to destroy The One Ring.

So, if you want to visit an incredibly detailed version of Middle-Earth without straining you wallet then give it a try.  It's now available on Steam or visit their website www.lotro.com
