So, after playing No Man's Sky a little bit more I started to think of a movie that I wanted to talk about. It's a film from New Zealand that came out in 1985. It stars Bruno Lawrence, Alison Routledge, and Pete Smith. It was loosely based on a sci-fi novel of the same name by Craig Harrison.
The main character, Zac Hobson was working in a lab on something called project flashlight that was working on a global energy grid. We can tell from the beginning though that something has gone horribly wrong. When Zac goes into work there is abandoned cars and a plane that is crashed but no signs of bodies.
Through the first half of the film Zac realizes he is the last man on Earth and it falls into complete despair. He does what everyone does at first he drinks fine wine and drives cars really fast, but then he finally starts to realize that no one else is around. It looks like he is about to commit suicide, but he meets a woman Joanne appears.
They have a relationship for a while an attempt to find other survivors. They meet Api, a Maori and as Zac has made calculations discovers that the only reason they survive the event was because it happened at the moment of all their deaths and he also discovers that it will happen again.
Zac decides to destroy the facility where the event began to stop it from happening again. Joanne and Api are going to drive a truck into the place, but Zac doesn't believe this will work. When Api and Joanne sneak off to have sex, Zac steals Api's truck and then drives into the facility and detonates an explosion. He wakes up in what appears to be a beach and it is implied that he is now in a parallel Earth.
The movie is great and is a bit hard to come by but if you can find it check it out.
