Defending your Life is a 1991 film starring Albert Brooks and Meryl Streep. In it Brooks' character, Daniel Miller dies unexpectedly on his birthday and is sent to judgement city to Defend his life. The 'courts' will be looking and nine days and decided if he has ruled his life by fear and has to go back to Earth to give life another shot, or lived his life to the fullest and is able to move on.
On the surface this movie is charming and thoughtful. Daniel is clever and funny, but no really over the top with all of his emotions. He kind of takes everything in stride and because of that the movie moves at a good clip.
Although the subject is pretty grim I never felt bogged-down in the idea of life and death in the movie. Both characters have accepted what has happened to them. And because the chemistry is so great between them, I believe them when they tell me everything is going to be fine.
I've seen this movie several times and I'm happy to report it finally hit Netflix. If you haven't seen it give it a look and I think you'll like what you see. Kick back and enjoy a thoughtful funny film about the afterlife.
