Hush is a VOD horror movie that came out in 2016. It stars Kate Siegel as Maddie, a deaf-mute writer. While making dinner one night a man breaks into her remote home and then through the course of the 82 minute run-time terrorizes her.
The tension in this movie is amazing. Through sound design you feel what Maddie is sensing. The sound is sucked out of the scene which is capitalized early in the movie when the killer is actually standing behind Maddie as she is writing. This is made even worse by the fact that a few short scenes before that the killer slowly discovers that she is deaf and can't hear her.
Everything that happens in the movie feels pretty natural. In many thriller/horror movies I've been pulled out of a situation because the actions of the characters don't seem natural. There was only one scene that was questionable but not terrible. Even the 'Showdown' at the end felt earned.
The sound design comes into play several times during the movie to continue throughout different times in the movie to reinforce what Maddie is sensing. Again it feels like she is actually in danger and when it seems like the tables turn it still makes Maddie appear that she is struggling.
I completely recommend Hush even for people that don't watch horror movies. In fact I would argue that Hush is more of a thriller with believable protagonist and antagonist. Check it out.
Hush is now on Netflix.
